Questions & Answers
How accurate is this import duty calculator?
This calculator provides a reliable estimate of your duties, taxes, and fees based on the product details, origin, and destination you enter. However, it’s intended for planning purposes only, the final duty rate is determined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the time of entry and can be affected by factors such as trade agreements, current tariff actions, or product-specific exclusions. For a binding quote, Freight180’s customs specialists can confirm the exact rate for your shipment.
What information do I need to estimate my import duties?
To get an accurate estimate, you’ll need: the country you’re importing from and to, a product description or HS/HTS code, the value of your goods, the quantity, shipping cost, insurance cost (if applicable), and your Incoterm (such as CIF or FOB). If you don’t know your product’s HS code, our team can help you classify it correctly before you ship.
What is the difference between duty and VAT in my results?
Duty is a tax charged on the value of imported goods, calculated based on the product’s HTS classification and country of origin. VAT (Value Added Tax) is a separate consumption tax applied in many countries, calculated on the total value of the goods plus duty, shipping, and insurance. Not all countries charge VAT on imports, the U.S., for example, does not have a federal VAT, but state and local taxes may apply separately.
Why do I need to know my Incoterm to estimate duties?
Your Incoterm determines which costs are included in the customs value used to calculate duties. Under CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight), the customs value includes the shipping and insurance costs. Under FOB (Free on Board), it typically does not. This difference directly affects your total landed cost, which is why selecting the correct Incoterm is essential for an accurate estimate.
Does this calculator include the latest 2026 U.S. tariffs?
This calculator reflects standard duty rates based on HTS classification and country of origin. However, additional tariffs, such as Section 301 duties, Section 232 tariffs, or the 2026 universal surcharge, may apply on top of the standard rate depending on your product and its origin. Given how quickly tariff policy has changed in 2026, we recommend confirming your total duty exposure with a Freight180 customs specialist before shipping.
